Book 1
I was first introduced to Kate Quinn when I read The Alice Network a few years ago. I was immediately captivated by the story and fell in love with Quinn’s mix of historical fiction and mystery.
Like The Alice Network, The Huntress follows 3 characters – Nina Markova, Ian Graham, and Jordan McBride – and how their stories cross. It jumps back and forth between WWII and the time period just after the war, taking the reader from eastern Russia to Poland to Boston.
I read a lot of books set in this time period, but not many have had such a focus on what was going on in Russia during WWII and the role Russian women played in the war. I had never heard of the Night Witches and was really fascinated by the important part they played in Russia’s war efforts and how they were treated by the government and the rest of the country.
While it became pretty clear to me early on in the story who the Huntress was, Quinn does an excellent job developing a deep set of characters whose journey I became really invested in. I found that the page turning factor had less to do with solving the mystery and more to do with wanting to know what each of these dynamic characters would do next, as their actions were anything but predictable. The Boston references were an added bonus. π
If you’re looking for a story to get lost in, I would certainly recommend The Huntress.
